Erectile Dysfunction

While it’s no surprise that men are interested in sex, maybe it’s not as testosterone driven as many women might think. Perhaps wanting to get it on isn’t just an issue of carnal lust, but more an issue of preserving long term virility - at least that’s what the studies are showing.

Viagra is well on its way becoming the best selling drug in the world, providing relief for men with erectile dysfunction. A man’s erection (or lack thereof) has become a part of everyday conversation as men seek out ways to prolong their sexual lives decade after decade.

Researchers in Finland took 989 men from 55 to 75 years of age and tested to see what helped them maintain their erection consistency. What they found is that erectile dysfunction may not be just a case of age, but rather frequency of sex. That’s right, how often you have sex seems to relate to how well a man can continue to have strong erections.

To test this theory, the researchers took the men and divided them into groups based on their sexual frequency. Those men who didn’t have sex as regularly reported have twice the number of instance of erectile dysfunction than those who had sex more often. More specifically, men who had sex less more once per week had fewer erection troubles, while those who had sex over four times each week had four times less troubles.

As a result, a logical conclusion is that having sex more often may actually help those with erectile dysfunction. The biggest obstacle, of course, is that when you have troubles with dysfunction, you might not want to have sex as often.

With the news that having sexual relations more often may be able to reverse erectile dysfunction, even without the aid of drugs, it seems like it might be worth the try, however.

What should also be kept in mind is that the research didn’t measure the effectiveness of natural erections, like those in the morning hours, and only used actual intercourse activities in the study.

Masturbation was also not included in this study, but since masturbation has been definitively linked with more sexual desire, perhaps this activity should have also been included.

It seems masturbation is still a common practice, after all, with nearly 4 in 10 of all men 45 to 59 masturbating at least once per week. And since desire in a monogamous relationship tends to wane in long term relationships, masturbation might be able to help to fill in the gaps and heighten one’s desire for more lovemaking or at least preserve one’s erections.

In the end, men are not doomed to lives of limp desire as they age, even though the Viagra ads might have them think otherwise. Instead, it seems that men just need to take matters into their own hands…and into bed more often.
